Screenshot and recording protection

Share with capture safeguards: Android blocks screenshots and recording; iOS hides recordings and closes view-only shares after screenshots.

Illustrative preview. Screens vary by platform.

Turn off saving and export for a controlled share to enable capture safeguards. Files stay in a temporary viewer, outside the recipient’s personal vault.

Android screenshots and recording

Secure windows block screenshots and recording of shared content on supported Android devices.

iOS recording protection

Recording or mirroring hides a view-only share and closes its session, clearing temporary previews and active keys.

iOS screenshot limits

iOS reports screenshots after capture. Revault closes the view-only session, but cannot prevent or delete that screenshot.

What view-only sharing protects

Use view-only sharing when someone needs to check a document or photograph without receiving an ordinary download. Revault removes the supported saving and export actions from that shared vault and applies the platform’s capture safeguards. This reduces convenient ways of keeping a copy, but the recipient must still be trusted with what appears on their screen.

Why iPhone and Android behave differently

Android secure windows can block operating-system screenshots and recordings of protected content. iOS does not offer the same guarantee for screenshots: the notification arrives after a screenshot has been taken. Revault can close that viewing session and clear its temporary data, but cannot undo the captured image. Recording and mirroring are handled separately by hiding protected content and ending access.

Example: let someone check an identity document

Share only the copy they need, disable saving and export, and choose a short expiry. Deliver the secret privately after confirming the recipient. Explain that the invitation is for temporary viewing, and ask whether they actually need a retained copy for their task. If a permanent copy is required, decide that explicitly rather than relying on capture restrictions to enforce a different agreement.

Practical checklist

  • Disable Allow saving and export when creating the controlled share.
  • Choose expiry and access limits separately; capture protection does not supply those limits.
  • Assume an external camera or modified device could retain visible information.

Frequently asked questions

Can an iPhone app completely prevent screenshots?

Revault cannot guarantee that on iOS. It receives a screenshot notification after capture and closes the view-only session. An existing screenshot cannot be recalled or deleted by Revault. This differs from Android’s secure-window protection.

Does screenshot protection apply to copies already exported?

No. A file saved outside the controlled viewer is governed by the receiving app and device. Create a new view-only invitation for future access if needed, and understand that changing the arrangement cannot retrieve an earlier exported copy.

Is screen protection enough for a highly sensitive document?

Treat it as one control alongside selecting minimal content, checking the recipient and limiting access time. It does not obscure visible personal information or prevent someone photographing the screen with another device.
