Remove metadata from photos, videos and PDFs

Remove hidden location, camera details and document properties on your phone. Choose an item or set a default for new vault imports.

A photo can contain its capture location and camera details. A PDF can carry an author name or creation date in its document properties. Revault lets you clean supported files inside an unlocked vault, without sending them to an online editing service.

Choose each item

Touch and hold a downloaded photo, video or PDF and choose Remove personal metadata. Confirm the replacement after reviewing its format limitations. Its folder, tags and favourite status stay the same, and replacing an item does not use another file slot.

Set a default for new imports

In the vault’s Media optimization settings, enable Remove personal metadata for new imports from Files, Photos, the camera and other apps’ share sheets. This encrypted preference is off by default and applies per vault, per device. Older items are not cleaned automatically.

Clean locally, then encrypt

Cleaning happens on your device before encryption. A selected item stays intact until its cleaned replacement is fully encrypted and saved. If cleaning or saving fails, the current item remains. Optional sync transfers the encrypted replacement using that vault’s chosen provider.

Understand the format changes

Still photos become PNGs with orientation applied and may use more storage. Videos keep supported audio and video tracks while source tags and timed metadata are omitted. PDFs are fully rewritten to remove document properties and XMP; interactive features or attachments may change or be lost.

Look beyond the information visible on the page

A photo can carry location, camera and capture details outside the pixels you see. A video container can hold descriptive tags or timed metadata. A PDF can contain author information and XMP document properties. These are reasons to prepare a copy before sharing it. They are also reasons to inspect the visible content separately: a street sign or a printed address can identify a location even when hidden metadata is removed.

Choose one-item cleaning or a default for future imports

Use Remove personal metadata on a supported downloaded item when you want an explicit decision for that file. Enable the per-vault import default when newly added material should follow that policy consistently. The default is device-specific and does not clean older files in the background. File naming is another setting: removing EXIF or PDF properties does not automatically replace a revealing filename.

Review the rewritten file before relying on it

Photos become PNGs with orientation applied, which can increase storage use. Videos keep supported audio/video tracks while source metadata is omitted. A PDF is rewritten to remove properties and XMP, and interactive content or attachments may change. Review the resulting image, playback and document pages. If cleaning fails, the import is rejected or the existing stored item remains current instead of silently saving an uncleaned replacement.

What is cleaned, and what still needs review?

Practical checklist

  • Keep an original or verified backup if quality, signatures or interactive document features matter.
  • Rename a revealing filename separately from cleaning hidden metadata.
  • Clean and inspect the item before creating a new shared snapshot; existing shares remain unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Is metadata removal the same as redacting a document?

No. It removes supported hidden fields, not visible text, faces, voices, account numbers or landmarks. It also does not guarantee removal of information within PDF attachments or embedded images. Prepare a properly reviewed redacted copy when the visible content must change.

Why can a cleaned photo be bigger than the original?

The cleaner writes a fresh PNG without source metadata, preserving the accepted image’s pixel dimensions rather than applying a lossy size reduction. PNG can use more bytes than a JPEG. Optimization and metadata removal make different trade-offs.

Will cleaning update a file I already shared?

No. Existing shares and backups are independent copies. Clean the stored item first, inspect it, then create a new invitation. Revoke an older controlled share separately if it should no longer be retrievable.
