Revault vs. Proton Drive
Both encrypt files before cloud storage. Revault’s mobile apps keep vaults on-device with optional native-cloud sync. Proton Drive centers on a Proton account and a shared cloud service across its clients.
Reviewed November 1, 2026 · Sources belowThe feature breakdown
| What matters | Revault | Proton Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Account requirements | No Revault account on mobile. The web app uses a passkey account. Native cloud sync requires the corresponding Apple or Google account. | A Proton account is required to use your own Drive storage. [1] |
| Where files live | Local storage by default. Optional private iCloud on iOS, Google Drive appDataFolder on Android, or Pro Revault Cloud across both. | Proton’s encrypted cloud service, accessed through its web and native clients. [1] |
| Cryptography | AES-256-GCM; device pattern plus a random device secret; PBKDF2-SHA-256 wrapping and HKDF-SHA-256 streaming file encryption. | Client-side end-to-end encryption using OpenPGP, with cryptographic signatures for authenticity. [1] |
| Names and metadata | Names, previews and file contents are encrypted. Cloud object counts, sizes and timing remain observable. | File/folder names and previews are encrypted. Operational timestamps, permissions and creator associations remain accessible to Proton. [2] |
| Recovery | A separate vault recovery key plus an encrypted cloud copy or .qvault backup. A web account reset cannot decrypt a vault. | Account recovery and encrypted-data recovery are distinct; configure data recovery methods before losing access. [3] |
| Sharing | Encrypted file or vault-snapshot shares with a separate secret, optional expiry and access limits. Recipients open them in the Revault app without an account. | End-to-end encrypted file and folder sharing, including sharing links. [1] |
| Security review | No independent security audit completed; no certification or security ranking is implied. | Open-source apps and published independent security audits, including a Securitum review. [1] |
A vault that starts on your device.
You want mobile vaults without a Revault identity, private native-cloud storage, a device pattern, and a recovery key you manage yourself.
Proton Drive may suit you better.
You want one encrypted cloud service across web and desktop, built-in file sharing, and published independent security audits.
Know the tradeoffs.
Revault keeps private iCloud and Google Drive sync within their own platforms, and offers Pro Revault Cloud for iPhone and Android together. It does not currently offer Proton’s integrated document collaboration or desktop sync client. Account-free mobile storage still depends on secure devices and trustworthy cloud providers.
No app can protect unlocked files from a compromised device. Exporting a decrypted file creates a copy outside the vault; deleting access cannot recall copies someone already saved. Keep recovery secrets and tested backups separately.
